Stephanie Howard, President
Snelling Staffing Services
Q. Describe your business.
A. We are a family owned, local franchise of Snelling offering full service staffing and recruiting to businesses in the Birmingham area since 1998. We provide temporary and permanent placement in office, professional, industrial and skilled-trade positions.
Q. Why did you decide to become a business owner?
A. I was given an amazing opportunity to partner with my former employer and mentor, another female business owner in Savannah, Ga. She was in an expansion mode and my husband and I were eager to accept the challenge.
Q. What has been the biggest obstacle you have faced and overcome in business?
A. Surviving the recession of 2008 -2011. We cut expenses everywhere possible, focused on the basics of our business and continued to build relationships with clients throughout that period. Fortunately we didn’t have any layoffs and we were able to keep our core staff without decreasing their salaries or benefits.
Q. How has being a member of WBEC South helped you?
A. It has been a tremendous experience in terms of business and personal development. We’ve gained clients as a direct result of our certification. I’ve had the opportunity to make friends with and learn from amazing, talented and innovative women business owners in our area. They energize and inspire me!
Q. What are your goals now? Where do you see your business going?
A. Our goal is to continue growing our business in the Birmingham market. We’ll do that by providing a great work environment for our team, an outstanding service and value for our clients and an exceptional experience for our candidates. We are in this for the long haul.
Q. What bit of knowledge / advice would you like to share with other women / women business owners?
A. Take care of yourself. Learn to say no when necessary. Don’t try to do it all. Quality of life and work/family balance is so important. If you are healthy and happy your business and team will be also. We only live once!
Q. What is the best advice you have ever received?
A. Treat everyone with respect and kindness. A smile or word of encouragement doesn’t cost anything and can make a difference in someone’s life!
