Carolyn Williams helped found Duncan-Williams with her husband in 1969. Since then, it has become one of the largest privately-owned investment firms in the United States. They’re dedicated to building and keeping relationships with everyone they meet, especially woman owned businesses. “Professionally it provides our firm the opportunity to participate in underwriting municipal bond deals where supplier diversity is encouraged. Personally I feel honored to represent women in a male dominated industry.”
Formula for Success
Her company has surely faced adversity, but nothing could compare to the loss of a business partner and spouse. “The year 1989 was the most difficult obstacle we faced when my husband Duncan passed away unexpectedly. I was alone with two small children and a business I had not been prepared to lead. Instead of allowing myself to doubt my capabilities, I went to work every day and learned the bond business. With the help and support from our loyal employees, we made it work.” All of Carolyn’s hard work paid off as she saw her business grow and opportunities arise. “Being WBENC certified provides us the opportunity to work with firms that believe in supplier diversity. As a regional broker-dealer, we didn’t have access to firms outside our footprint. With our WBENC certification, other companies began to understand who we were and more importantly our underwriting and sales capabilities.”
